National Great Rivers Museum

The National Great Rivers Museum located at Melvin Price Lock and Dam is dedicated to tell the story of the Mississippi River. Interactive displays and exhibits help to understand the many aspects of the river and how it affects our lives. A pilot house simulator and a working model of Melvin Price lock and dam give a lively impression of the work on the river. Lock and Dam tours are held daily at 10 am, 1 pm and 3 pm.

Coming from East St. Louis follow the Great River Road / IL 3 north and turn into IL 143 north up to Melvin Price Locks & Dam.

Alton Museum of History and Art

The Alton Museum of History and Art is featuring a small river room filled with memorabilia of the Eagle Packet Company, Streckfus Steamers and other boats. Included are the ornate cash register from the Eagle Boat Store, the engine room bell from the Streckfus steamer J.S. DELUXE, Captain Buck Leyhe’s cap and megaphone and more. Many artifacts have been donated by late Ruth Ferris. Also shown is a fine pilot house replica.

From Melvin Price Lock & Dam follow IL 143 north, turn right on Broadway, turn left on IL 140 up, turn right into College Avenue.
