steamboat inspector

A government official empowered to enforce steamboat laws and navigation rules and who can grant, suspend, or revoke licenses issued to steamboat officers. Offices are maintained in nearly every large river city. A hull inspector is a steamboat inspector who has charge of the examination of hulls, superstructure, proper stowing of cargo, etc. A boiler inspector is a similar official with training for the inspection of steam boilers, machinery, and the like.
