lathes’ cabin

The back, or after section, of the cabin. On some boats the lathes' cabin was partitioned off from the main cabin, on others it was delineated by the presence of fine carpeting. The lathes' cabin sometimes featured a piano and colored-glass windows facing rearward. While not the exclusive domain of women, social mores of the time dictated that a gentleman would not enter the lathes' cabin unless escorted or invited in by a woman. It also served as a family room.
