Now Riverlorian (well, Discovery Guide as they call them in these days) Travis Vasconcelos has produced a well over two hours audiobook with all these wonderful Delta Queen history and stories to play directly in your CD player at home: “Delta Queen – Grande Dame of the Mississippi” tells the story of the great historic steamboat from the beginnings on the Sacramento River and her famous voyage through the Panama Canal to the glorious days on the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers.

Because I Told You I Didn’t

Travis Vasconcelos – 2008 – ca 45 min. – $14.99 (plus shipping $5 US, $7 international)

Travis’ music CD brings the great sound of the river to your home, featuring all time favorites like the “Delta Queen Waltz”, “Aura Lee”, “Lady is a Tramp” plus 15 minutes of the great Delta Queen Calliope. Not being one of these offish, high-end Hollywood studio productions makes these piano and calliope recordings even more authentic.

Delta Queen 75th Anniversary

Eccentric Crank Productions, Herron Rail Video – 2002 – 60/90 min. – $19.95/29.95 (available as video or DVD-R)
available at www.herronrail.com

Fabulous video footage of the 75th Anniversary Cruise and first cruise of the Delta Queen for Delaware North Co. August 26-29, 2002. With lots of Delta Queen and steamboating history, wonderful historic film material for example from the Gordon C. Greene, Avalon, President, Admiral, the Greene family and of course the Delta Queen. Watch the speeches held for anniversary, hear a great, long interview with Delta Queen Master Capt. Mike Williams, experience a pilot house tour by “Toot” Maloy, let First Assistant Engineer Jeff Smith introduce the engine room, listen to the history talk by Clarke C. “Doc” Hawley and to some steamboatin’ stories by Letha Jane Greene. I’d recommend the longer version of the video as the history talks are longer – and they are really good.

Iron Crowns & Paddlewheels

Eccentric Crank Productions, Herron Rail Video – 2003 – 87 min. – $29.95 (available as video or DVD-R)
available at www.herronrail.com

A history of steamboats on the Mississippi & Ohio Rivers. It’s 87 minutes with great vintage film of riverboats from the 1920s to today. Most of these boats are long gone today. It has towboats, packets, excursion boats and ore, all of them steam powered.
The main program runs 52 minutes but there is extra footage of stern-wheeler towboats, Herbert Hoover’s trip in 1929, the boat “Gordon C. Greene” and even a small stern-wheeler built in 1999. There’s also a preview of “Delta Queen 75th Anniversary” so the tape runs a total of 87 minutes.
