Steamboat Operation Questions

Hello all!

I am writing a feature film script and I have some questions about steamboat operations, specifically what methods are/were used to free steamboats from sandbars or from other shallow-water instances where they ran aground?

Are there any situations or accounts that can shed light on the methods crews used to free boats from the river bottoms?
