    Steamboat Art

I came across copies of two paintings done by Stanley M. Arthurs for Scribners magazine. The boat in the vertical image looks like it could be Fulton's 1807 steamboat. The horizontal is the Hope of Albany built by a group who wanted to compete with Livingston & Fulton for passenger service on the North River. They had a second boat called the Perseverance.

Livingston used his political power to put the other steamboat line out of business so that he could maintain his monopoly for steam navigation on the river.
