Str. GOLDEN EAGLE - Anniversary of Sinking

This week marks the 62nd anniversary of the sinking of the Str. GOLDEN EAGLE at Grand Tower, Illinois on May 18, 1947. The "GOLDIE" was a goner this time (she had survived another sinking in 1941 at Chester, Illinois) and was scrapped save for her pilothouse which was rescued from the wreckage through the efforts of Miss Ruth Ferris, who bid $257 at a Corps of Engineers auction to win the revered relic. It stood on the grounds of the Community School, where Ruth taught fifth grade and was assistant principal for 35 years. In 1961, it was donated to the Missouri Historical Society, where Ruth, after having retired from teaching in 1957, was into her second career as curator of the River Room. Sad to say, the pilothouse is now dismantled and in storage, but there is "talk" that, thanks to a generous grant from the Golden Eagle River Museum Club, the old "sky palace" will be restored and again placed on exhibit. Here's hoping this comes to pass - and soon!
