    Another "riverboat" headed to Florida?

    [URL="http://www2.tbo.com/news/business/2012/apr/03/greco-debartolo-pitch-tampa-riverboat-hotel-ar-388179/"]http://www2hotel-ar-388179/

    Not sure the link will work but essentially developers are pitching the idea of bringing the"Empress of the North" to the Tampa waterfront.

    Ok, it didn't really work. Just go to tbo.com and type in riverboat el in the search bar. It's all there.

        This is absurd! That boat would almost fill up the basin behind the Tampa Convention Center as well as block it's water view.

        The article brings out another point against any city in Florida going for these projects: since they float, they pay no property taxes. This group wants the city to provide power, water and waste connections to the boat.

        Also, the proponents of the plan say the boat could run occasional excursions into Tampa Bay. Well, I've done a couple of those excursions on the USS American Victory which is considerably longer than the Empress of the North and, while it is possible, the bay can get pretty choppy. Chances are that tugs would be needed to get the boat turned and into it's docking space. I'll believe this one when I see it come down the Tampa Ship Canal. However, it could happen as Tampa seems to love ex-Mayor Dick Greco, although he didn't get too far in the last election. He is a former VP of DeBartolo (one of the biggest mall developers in America). I'll bet it goes to San Francisco or L.A.

          At least she is a deep draft boat that could handle the area better than the Delta Queen.
