    Amen...

    My friend Ruthie comes to mind as do my friends from St Louis, Rock Island, the Catskills, and Marco Island, and yes a few couples from Calyfornie, a bunch from Cincy and one or two from Louisville...Deb and I don't come close to qualifying as the all time DQ groupies in terms of money forked over, but I will say that we spent more money on the old gal than Capt. Tom did buying her...wait, am I preaching to the choir here? Is it possible that paying passengers have a passion, too, maybe a vision, a dream, a hope?

    Geeze, Deb and I spent more on the Delta Queen Sundeck Starboard than the mortgage on our first house in 1978...Pluhease, let all of us get a grip here, this isn't a we versus them scenerio...

    Especially those who have spent thousands of their hard earned $ to ride the DQ year after year. They can pontificate to the moon as far as I am concerned. Viva Ann Zeiger, the best pontificator of all.

    Why are some seen as pontificating because they are trying ideas, any ideas, to save this inanimate object that we all so cherish? Maybe some did only work for a few years on the Legendary One, why is that a disqualifier?... Frankly, even people that only worked for a few years on the boat are a hellava lot luckier than me, and I feel their abbreviated work schedule makes them no less ambitious and enthusiastic for saving our DQ than the old timers...I consider myself extremely lucky for my experiences...but I don't qualify in my enthusiasm in your eyes, do I? We missed you in Madison this weekend, Deb and I are in Ashtabula, as we speak, re-enjoying the friendship shown to us, the wayward New Yorkers, this weekend...

    I think a deep breath is in order, my friend...and I shudder at what you have probably said about my posts...you have something to reveal? We've all been waiting, since the first time you mentioned this...

    I'm going up to the Delta Queen ,with my wife Myra, former Chief purser, very soon, and I can't help but say I get angry hearing some folks pontificate about the boat they worked on for a couple of seasons, prescribing a course of action to save the boat... I suppose we all love the old Boat, and have fond memories, and I too, hold her very close to my heart, a quarter of a century's worth... Some of our destinies are inextricably entwined with the Delta Queen and will eventually be revealed...

    Huh? Sorry, but I'm more confused than before. Who gets the guarantee? The hotel people? MAL? What happens if the DQ "hotel" becomes a desirable destination and folks are driving 300 miles only to find it's been sold and headed down the river? There's something fishy about the whole setup from this perspective.

    What puzzles me about this hotel arrangement is why would anyone invest so much into a project like this if it could suddenly end should the boat be sold to someone else. Seems odd.

    As promised, Jennifer took a careful look-see this week, and OF COURSE the pitmans are still connected, as we thought, with no plans to disconnect them. There are no plans, either--no reason to disconnect. The hotel plans are moving along nicely, and Jennifer has been giving lots of tours.

    The Delta Queen

    This IS the Real Captain Mike Williams, and to my knowledge the pitman arms have not been disconnected, as a matter in fact I spoke with some one there yesterday,and the lease with the owners states that the lessor must maintain the vessel in operating condition, regardless, unhooking the pitmans in a minor issue and would only be perhaps in response to Coast Guard demands to "disable" the vessel from operation, a technical matter easily resolved. As far as the other poster, "Captain Mike", no doubt a good man and Captain, but I am Captain Mike Williams of the Delta Queen, 25 years onboard and proud of it!

    Thank you, Judy. I thought of that after I hit "post." Our Captain Mike Williams would have gone down and started scraping the algae himself, and had an answer one way or the other on the pitmans!!

    I just spoke with Jennifer Lemmon, who is working on the DQ these days, wearing many hats. She has been shore tours director the past two seasons. To her knowledge, the pitmans are not disconnected, but she will check when she returns to the boat in a couple of days. In the past, there had been some talk about running the paddlewheel a bit, just for show--keep in mind, this is along the lines of "wouldn't it be nice if . . ," and is not a priority. They are very busy getting the boat systems ready for hotel guests in May--the alarm system was being tested the past few days; sprinkler system charged and ready; lots of painting going on. They don't have time for "what ifs" at the moment! So I'm not sure if Captain Mike's glance from a bridge while driving was completely accurate. Jennifer will let me know when she gets back to the boat, but as far as we know, there is no reason the pitmans would be disconnected.

    Speculation re: Pitmans

    Does removing the pitmans somehow satisfy a requirement that the DQ is physically (and visibly) out of service without doing any other harm to the steam plant?
