They are coming from both directions!

The AMERICAN QUEEN, which passed through here Oct. 1 upbound, will be in Davenport Wednesday for her downbound shore stop. She'll be back up here Tuesday the 15th with river luminaries Schoen and Hameister aboard. Meanwhile, the QUEEN OF MISSISSIPPI is upbound, looks like she'll get here around noon Tuesday. I haven't checked her schedule to see if she's stopping on the upbound or not. River luminary aboard her is Capt. Paul PT Thoene as afterwatch pilot. PT is well known as the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN Master for many years. He spent a year here one week in 2006 as they repaired and repaired her boilers. Little did we know then it would be her last year here, or anywhere, underway.
So crank up those webcams if you want to see some overnight boats on the UMR these next couple of weeks. As usual this past year and a half, I have church meetings coinciding with the shore stops, but I suspect I'll at least get a gander along the way somewhere in the harbor...

WOW! It took only 2 hours and 15 min. for the QOM to travel from lock 17 to 16. Normal travel time for any other boat is 3 hours. I tried to catch her at 16, but she was too fast for me. It seems to me that at such a fast cruising speed, as a passenger, one would miss many sights along the way. The riverlorian must double as an auctioneer.

      Travel time

Greg, if you are going by the times posted on the Corps Locks website, those aren't always accurate as to when a boat leaves a lock. They've got fancy new technology instead of having the lockmaster record it, and you'll notice that sometimes a boat spends a couple of hours inside a lock, according to the SOL and EOL times listed. Now that isn't to say the QoM didn't go faster, I wasn't chasing her today. She arrived at 15 a little after noon and was all stop over at Oneida by 1. She was supposed to leave at 5:30 tonight, headed up to Dubuque. According to where the AQ was last listed, I figure they'll pass each other around mile 513 around 9:30 tonight. I'll be over at Oneida whenever the AQ arrives, I'm guessing about 2 AM...
