    Wanna Go Towboating?

For those who have always yearned to take a ride on a working river towboat here is your chance!

In support of the Howard Steamboat Museum's annual Wine Tasting-Buffet-Silent Auction on October 5th, American Commercial Lines (ACL) has graciously donated a multi-day trip for two on one of their towboats. Arrangements as to where you board and where you go will be optional and arranged by ACL.

Jeffboat has donated an afternoon (Friday, November 16th) at Churchill Downs in a luxurious 5th floor Jockey Club Suite seating 24 persons with a generous food/beverage allowance.

TO BID: Attend the Wine Tasting in person OR telephone your bid anytime (operators are standing by!) to the museum at 812-283-3728. Phone bids will also be accepted the night of the fundraiser at 502-523-6333. Further information about the event (including how to make reservations) is available on the website by clicking on Howard Steamboat Museum Jeffersonville, IN. The Wine Tasting will be held this year at ACL's office building, just a short distance UPriver from the museum at 1701 East Market Street, in the fifth floor conference room with a terrace overlooking the Ohio!

We are very grateful to Mark Knoy, ACL President and CEO, and to Patrick Sutton, Jeffboat Vice President, for the use of their beautiful building and for these wonderful donations to support the operating fund of the museum.

Foggy Friday Morning on the Ohio at the HSM

Bids are coming in for the towboat trip. Don't miss out on this rare opportunity!

Stopped along Riverside Drive en route to the museum this morning to take a gander through the drizzle across the Ohio at the new QUEEN OF THE MISSISSIPPI, which has been at the Louisville landing the past two days. It is something to think that the QOTM is the NEWEST passenger boat on the river and, tied up within a short distance, is the OLDEST operating steamboat in the United States!

Nice to have overnight passenger riverboats visiting the port again!

      Do I hear...?

Bids are CLIMBING for the ACL towboat trip! We will continue to receive bids through Friday evening!

Following an article about the trip in the local newspaper, a lady called the museum yesterday and asked if the cruise went to Hawaii!

        After the Ball is Over...

The annual Wine Tasting/Buffet/Auction Fund Raiser for the Howard Steamboat Museum was a BIG success last night! Everybody enjoyed ACL's beautiful fifth floor reception room and terrace overlooking the Ohio, with John Gage providing some great river and folk music. The food was fabulous (as was the wine!) and the auction items brought good prices!

CONGRATULATIONS to George and Kim Burch as the winners of the towboat trip! And much appreciation and thanks to them for their additional, and generous, support of the museum! If you aren't already a museum member, I cordially invite you to become one! Information is available on the website by clicking on Howard Steamboat Museum Jeffersonville, IN.

MANY THANKS to ALL who participated and to Shawn Turner, our committee chair, for all of her hard work. As you can well imagine, that 22 room Victorian mansion and grounds require a LOT of maintenance and we must rely on fundraisers, memberships and donations -- plus gift shop and admission revenue to keep it rolling along!

The annual Christmas Open House will be on Sunday, December 9th from 1-4 PM.

Hope they enjoy the trip. Since there is a dearth of steamboats on the river now, I was tempted, but knew I couldn't outbid on that one. Bon Voyage to the Burches. See if you can get on a downbound on the Lower Mississsippi and experience flanking.
