This classic shot of the Howard built Str. BLUFF CITY was a gift from Mrs. Loretta Howard now 50 years ago. It's a dandy and she's new and pristine at the yards in Jeffersonville. Note the man standing down the bank with the dark clothing, white shirt and hat looking at the camera. Also note the fancy name lettering on the BLUFF; this typical of the famed ANCHOR LINE steamers. WAY'S PACKET DIRECTORY lists her under Entry No. 0655: Built at Howard's, 1896, 224 X 42 X 6 ft. as the last and only sternwheeler the ANCHOR LINE operated. Engines 13's/5 ft. with three boilers 38" X 20 ft. Machinery, whistle and equipment from packet BOONE. Nov. 18, 1897, loaded for New Orleans with two loaded barges in tow, fire broke out and she was landed at Chester, Ill and burned a loss. All 40 passengers and crew landed safely.

The WASHINGTON. Way's Packet Directory lists her under No. 5711. Built Wheeling, W.Va. 1880 as SIDNEY (see). Rebuilt 1921 at Mound, City, Illinois. Streckfus Steamers, St. Louis. 221 x 35 x 5.5. Engines 18s, 7 ft. stroke. Four boilers from GREATER NEW ORLEANS. Operated by Capt. D. Walter Wisherd, based at Cincinnati and then Pittsburgh. Bill Pollock & Fred Way were called the 'Gold Dust' pilots. Fred Way had much to say about her in S&D REFLECTOR. Dismantled St. Louis, 1938.
