It's summer, 1965, and we see the 'working girls' SARA & sternwheeler SEWICKLEY at Pittsburgh. Two boats, two stacks and one paddlewheel. Not steam for sure. Don't know about the SARA but the SEWICKLEY is more familiar. I like the little awnings over the two windows on the deck house aft of the SARA'S pilothouse--a touch of class. No doubt the 55 gal. drums on the stern of the SARA serve as 'hot tubs' for the guys when they got off duty.

It's summer, 1902, and the spanking new SENATOR CORDILL is backing away from the Howard Yards, Jeffersonville, Indiana, headed for her Vicksburg & Natchez run and her paint job gleams in the afternoon sun. Originally 170 X 33 X 5 ft., she was extended in 1925 to 193 X 36 X 6.9. She survived until 1934 when, under Capt. Fred Hornbrook, she hit the wickets at Dam 14 and sank. Her passengers in this picture are dressed to the nines sporting suits, long dresses, big hats and parasols against the sun. She carried two swinging stages Mississippi style.

The Str. HERBERT E. JONES, built Pt. Pleasant, W. Va., 1940 as the JASON: condensing engines - 16's/32's & 10 ft. stroke, 2,000 hp. with two Foster-Wheeler steam generators. She was a beauty and conveyed power and authority. Oil burners removed in 1952 and fired by coal after that.

The EDNA. The late William 'Slim' Brandt wrote a note about her and it also surfaced. Bill penned: "I learned to pilot on this boat in 1941-'42. She was sold up the Kanawha River in 1950. My buddy bought her in 1963 and he and I were going to operate her here at Steubenville. We leased her to ZUBIK at Pittsburgh and she was destroyed by fire at Glenwillard, Pa., on May 13, 1963. That ended our short towing career."
