The Str. Julius C. Wilkie museum boat at Winona, Minnesota. She formerly was the wooden hulled towboat James P. Pearson, built at the Kahlke yards in Rock Island. Retired in the 1950's she was a museum boat at Winona until set ablaze by vandals in 1981. Almost totally destroyed, her stacks, wheel and other parts were salvaged and incorporated into the new Wilkie Steamboat Center. The photo shows the original boat before it was destroyed and rebuilt. Thanks very much to Keith Norrington for the picture!
The SPRAGUE on the Ohio River near Owensboro, KY, sometime between 1918 and 1930. Thanks very much to Keith Norrington for sending the pictures, perfectly showing the impressive size of this famous towboat.
The Str. IDLEWILD at Memphis, Tennessee, taken on April 22, 1927 during the big flood - tied up behind the wharfboat for the Str. KATE ADAMS. Hard to believe this was taken almost 80 years ago and the boat still runs today as the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE!
Keith Norrington recently discovered this fascinating picture. Thanks, Keith, for sharing!
