This is another "can you identify what it is" picture. I found this on the LOUISIANA STAR operating as excursion boat in the Hamburg, Germany, harbor. It is a hydraulic construction that enables the captain to lift the paddlewheel up and down so it "doesn't disturb the propellers when running". The paddlewheel is lifted out of the water just high enough it barely toughes the water surface any more ... But there is a positive aspect on the LOUISIANA STAR, too: They really do have a steam whistle, operated my high-pressure air and some steam mixed in so it really makes a great steam whistle sound! Same technology is used on the sidewheeler HERRSCHING on the Lake Ammersee near Munich, Germany.
