The last part of the European boats series so far shows the LUDWIG FESSLER, a 1926 built sidewheeler on Lake Chiemsee, southern Germany. Running with diesel engines since 1973 the boat provides hourly connection between Prien and the Herrenchiemsee island where one of the famous King Ludwig castles is located. 

This is another "can you identify what it is" picture. I found this on the LOUISIANA STAR operating as excursion boat in the Hamburg, Germany, harbor. It is a hydraulic construction that enables the captain to lift the paddlewheel up and down so it "doesn't disturb the propellers when running". The paddlewheel is lifted out of the water just high enough it barely toughes the water surface any more ... But there is a positive aspect on the LOUISIANA STAR, too: They really do have a steam whistle, operated my high-pressure air and some steam mixed in so it really makes a great steam whistle sound! Same technology is used on the sidewheeler HERRSCHING on the Lake Ammersee near Munich, Germany.

The KAISER WILHELM at Lauenburg (near Hamburg), Germany, on the Elbe River. This coal fired, steam powered sidewheeler was built in 1900 and serves as an excursion boat.

Can you find the paddlewheeler in this picture? It's taken at Budapest, Hungary, and it shows one piece of the remainings of the once proud fleet of paddlewheel steamboats on the Danube River. Only the hull is remaining, while the superstructure now is something like a combination of restaurant and wharf boat. 

The HOHENTWIEL is probably the most beautiful steamboat on Europe. Built in 1913 and beautifully renovated just a few years ago it is still steam powered and serves as an excursion boat on Lake Constance ("Bodensee") in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, owned by a museum at Lindau, Germany.
