A lift of a glass of champagne, cola.....tea, beer....or a cool glass of milk....and hope all have a bright future. Cheers to all. Mary K. Hukill Wednesday, December 28. 2005AN INIDENT AT THE ST. LOUIS QUARANTINE - JUNE 1850From a letter written by an unknown lady named Mary,June 12 1850. We left Cincinnati about dark (on Saturday on the Steamboat Mount Vernon) and were at St. Louis the next Wednesday night or should I say Thursday morning about 12 or 1 o"clock. The quarantine was about four miles below the city - when we were near - our boat gave every signal to the officers in their power - but it was storming dreadfully - the night was very dark - and as none made their appearance - and the Capt. could not find the place - he decided to go on - But as soon as we reached the city - he was arrested - and back we had to go - amid thunder, lightening and rain - and submit to an examination - which was so thorough - that the Dr’s came to even the door of the ladies cabin - with a bow and a "good morning ladies how do you all do? - pretty well here?" and off they went - We might have had fifty cases of cholera - and they been none the wiser - well - that performance over - we returned to the city - the Capt. all the while remaining in custody - and then the matter was taken to the mayor’s office and the Capt. honorably discharged as having done his duty - That was the way I decided also - I think they should at least have been compelled to pay for our breakfast - as the Capt. had all of us to feed that morning - when he expected to have landed us long before - and it is no small allowance that satisfies three or four hundred. Thursday, December 22. 2005Let the races begin....first page on the blogHAPPY Holidays to Everyone!! it is December 22, 2005 This is my first time to write to all you steamboat fans. It is my thrill and honor. I'm from Evansville, Indiana. We're right across the bridge to Henderson, Kentucky....so, we really are very, very southern Indiana. It is a hope to have Evansville, Indiana as a great hub of river boats, steamboats, Yachts, cabin cruisers, and other boats for our Ohio Region. In this blog I will keep you posted what I know about the boats that stop here, the ones who can't, and the ones who may some day. It is a thrill to have some of these fine boats stop by here this past year. The Spirit of Jefferson, from Louisville, KY was here--the first of such kind of boat in decades, and the wonderful Natchez from New Orleans, LA. Now, that was a great inspiration. Both boats were received with such interest. I know that next year, we'll rip up the Ohio River Region and make you all proud that we are also on the the routes to many boat destinations and stops. So, enjoy the eggnog, the great holiday cookies, sing up a storm and remember the reason for the season. Hope you pause a moment this season for our river friends in New Orleans, LA, as they face a much different Christmas this year. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every one of them and I hope that the year of 2006 is filled with much hope. Well, that is all for today....I just wanted to see if this darn page worked. Sometime I'll be fancy with pictures. Have a Merry Christmas to you and yours. Mary K. Hukill Saturday, December 17. 2005Welcome to Steamboats.org Weblogs! This is my Christmas present for all of you, to the wonderful supporters and visitors of Steamboats.org: Have your own "weblog" or "blog" to publish stories, history, commented pictures and more! We've seen so many interesting stories, snippets of history, etc. on the steamboats.org message board that would have been worth to be preserved for longer than just a week or so until it disappears from the front page. These postings are still there, but hard to find. The weblogs are much better organized, with archives and search function, so it's a much better place for valuable information and stories. Also, pictures posting is much easier in the weblog than on the message board and the weblogs are designed to hold pictures, which the message board basically is not. Personal touchWeblogs will also give you a chance to go a bit off topic. Weblogs should be related to boats, ships, river, etc. and may not go totally off topic, e.g. writing about cars or asian food all the time How to applyThough I'd like to offer this to as many people as possible, I can't give it to everyone. But who ever wants to have his/her personal weblog here at Steamboats.org, please send me an e-mail (franz-neumeier@steamboats.de) and I'll send you more detailed information about writing your personal weblog. It's almost as easy as writing an e-mail, but you'd probably will have to learn a few easy things on how exactly to do it. ResponsibilityPlease keep in mind that when writing a weblog, you're publishing directly to the website, you're responsible for what you're writing and you're responsible for maintaining your weblog which includes taking care of nasty or even illegal comments (if you allow comments on your postings) and of course respect laws, copyright issues, etc. by yourself when posting. If you think you can't handle this, please don't apply for a weblog.
