The CITY OF CINCINNATI in 1904.
Thanks to R. Dale Flick for the picture.
The big ice of 1904 has the CITY OF CINCINNATI & the VIRGINIA locked in tight at the Cincinnati Public Landing. Both steamers survived the winter. The CITY OF CINCINNATI has steam up and dim figures of crew members are around her wheels with ice spuds to relieve some of the pressure.

Beautiful salon of the COMMONWEALTH. (thanks to Frank Prudent for identifying the boat).

Winter 1904/'05 in Cincinnati and no relief for the RELIEF [Way No: T2137]. The RELIEF, termed "the hard luck boat" by Fred Way, is in sad straights at the east end of the Cincinnati Public Landing. This sternwheeler was 140 X 25 from the Axton Yard, Brownsville, Pa., 1895 and later sold to the 'Combine' for use in/around Cincinnati.

Look sharp at the little effigy just forward of the staff showing the little mule (or horse?) with the little man either pulling it back to chasing it. That was a famous effigy in steamboat lore for some years.

The sinking of the Gem City.

Northern Belle with great wheelhouse painting.
