Another great picture from Tom Schiffer's collection shows an authentic flatboat excursion on the Ohio River, with the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE in the background. Supposedly this picture was taken in 1962 or 1963.
Captain Tom Schiffer's photo of Monday, July 2, 2007, is not of an authentic flatboat. The boat is probably motorized; I say that because of the rudder on the stern. An authentic flatboat would not have a rudder, but it would have sweeps. Authentic flatboats travel as the current and the wind moves them. Authentic flatboats are maneuvered by sweeping the water. A rudder on an authentic flatboat is as useful as a rudder on a hot-air balloon=useless. For more information, see www.earlysteamboats.com. In addition, consider what would happen if Captain Schiffer's steamboat would break down (a concept difficult to digest because he is such a good mechanic): He could maneuver his craft with his canoe paddle but his turning the rudder would bear no effect. Perhaps your word "authentic" referred to the historical clothing worn by the crew under their anachronistic personal flotation devices. SAFETY FIRST!
