Okay, here is a little trivia this week: This is a paddlewheeler named MICHIGAN. Where is it located at? (picture: Wikipedia)
And here is the answer: It's located on Lake Biwa, Japan. Here is a link to a blog entry on the owners website which shows a lot of nice pictures of the boat: http://biwako.biwako.shiga-saku.net/e17282.html
This boat was built for use at a Japanese theme park in the late 1990's. David Morecraft of Peru, IN built a steam calliope (mounted on the port side of the pilothouse fwd) for her and went over there and installed it. They insisted on a automated player unit, so he put one on and recorded several songs. The Japanese didn't seem to cotton to "Beautiful Ohio", "Cruisin Down The River", "Waitin' For The Rob't E. Lee" and such...however, I understand they still use those songs from time to time.
Last I heard this boat was sold to private interests and she runs on Lake Biwa at Otsu as a typical excursion boat.
She appears to have a pitman drive system...I'll have o ask Dave about that and see what he has to say, seeing as he has been on her he may know more.
the michigan boat has been in operation since 1983 on Lake Biwa Otsu, Japan. I worked on it as for 9 months in 1984 thru the Japan Adventure Program with Lansing Community College (Michigan) there was no theme park there back then, but might be now. i visited again in 1987 and it is still operating today.
