Wow, how fortunate to ride as a guest on a towboat....something I always wanted to do. Up here on the Great Lakes, in order to be a guest aboard our great freighters one either has to be the ships's owner or a VERY good customer. (Most "lakers" have owner's and/or guest suites aboard...they usually have plenty of space!) I guess USCG rules come into play as I'm told. Once in a while the spouse of a crewmember can ride, depending on the company. What a great experience though...you are very lucky!
