Subject: Re: The steamer GOLDEN EAGLE

I was born and raised in East St. Louis, Il. We had neighbors in the next block from our house on Bond Avenue named Bill and Catherine Hess. They had become personal friends of Captain Lehey and every year their summer vacation was spent on a trip on the Golden Eagle. Captain Lehey promised them they would have a job on the boat when Bill retired from American Steel Foundries. They lived for that day. Bill retired in 1947 and they began their new life on the Golden Eagle. Tragically, on their first trip the boat struck a piling near Grand Tower, Illinois and was destroyed. Bill and Catherines' dream died with the Golden Eagle that night.
