Subject: Re: gambling

Whatever personal feelings anyone here has for or against gambling on the Delta Queen boats.. the following would be true:

Gambling would be a revenue source that would virtually guarantee that the vessels would never be taken out of service again for financial reasons. It would also guarantee that any ownership of the vessels now or in the future would have the highest standards of ethics and legalities due to the stringent licencing requirements now.

The truth of the matter is that gambling on interstate vessels would never happen without another act of Congress due to the different licencing or legalities in each state the vessels land. Even with an act of Congress allowing this - there would be years of lawsuits from states because of either unfair competition in states that allow gaming or states suing to not have it.

The bottom line is that no matter how pure you would like to have your steamboating experience - gaming onboard the vessels would be a virtual guarantee that they would never be bankrupted again and significantly reduce the fare for everyone. It would also be very easy to avoid the casino as many do on the deepwater vessels.

But relax - because it will never happen.
