Barbara H: Did a "dry run" on small stacks (seems like it ought to be in lower case) today. Put my steam launch Missie in at Vevay to check out the landing etc. The Welcome People in town were very courteous but did not know any details about the small stacks event.
From my perspective (20' steam powered launch) the landing is easy to negotiate on the launch cycle, but getting it back on the trailer in that current (sign sez: NO SWIMMING, Treacherous Currents). I need some lessons from a real steamer pilot. But then, again, they don't hafta get the steamer on a trailer either...and I ain't got no stern thruster. Went down as far as the upper edge of Carrollton, but did not get as far as the stern wheeler. Was a long time getting back to Vevay against the current at an indicated 4.1 mph water speed. Didn't take much over an hour on the way down but nearly three getting back. Didn't take my river charts and ran where the current was strong.
River was beautiful, smoothe as a mirror. The bouys in mid stream were putting out tight Vee wakes in that current. As it stands, there is no place for me to board or tie up at Vevay...their boating float being still out of service from the high water and the ramp full of thick sticky mud.
This is a beautiful part of the River and deserving of a visit. We passed through that part of the pool on the American Queen last March at night and did not get to see much. Then too, I'm afraid I am an engine room freak and spent a lot of time in the American Queen's engine room.
