Sharon: In her operating days the WAKEROBIN basically was a government light tender, meaning that she went up and down the river, pushing a barge loaded with supplies for the navigation lights along the river. She operated primarily on the Upper Mississippi for a number of years. After retirement, she was a landing boat for the Tresler Oil Company below Cincinnati. At that time her engines and many other items were still on board. In 1975 she was sold to Capt. Dennis Trone, who had her towed to Chattanooga for use as a wharfboat for his excursion steamer JULIA BELLE SWAIN. She was sold again and came back to the Ohio River in the mid 1980's. The late Ben Bernstein planned to completely renovate her and bring her to Jeffersonville, Indiana (opposite Louisville) as a restaurant, but these plans never materialized. In the meantime, the idea of using her as a "haunted boat" during the Halloween season came about and apparently is very profitable since they purchased the old sidewheel dredge WM. S. MITCHELL for the same purpose. Personally, I don't like seeing historic steamboats used for such a purpose, but at least they haven't gone to the scrapyard.
