I am researching my great-great grandfather, James L. Smith, who was a steamboat captain on the upper Willamette River in the late 1880's and early 1900's. He handled the steamers Nellie and Isabel, and then was the master on the steamer Modoc.
I would love to find some photos of him or any of these steamers. I would also love to find any personal stories about Capt. J.L. Smith for a paper I'm writing.
I found that he was born in Indian Territory (Arkansas) in 1837, but don't know why or when he moved to Oregon. All I have are two obituaries and a 1866 marriage record. I appreciate any help!!!
Thanks, Janis jkhorsi@concentric.net
