Jane: Indeed, Richard deserves the credit for that terrific booklet! And thanks for being on the alert for a GL Steamers flag! It does stand to reason that the DQ, if renamed, would have been named for your grandmother, despite the hoo doo about boats being named with "M" having bad luck. The Str. MISSISSIPPI (now the BECKY THATCHER showboat/restaurant at Marietta) had a history of running through herself, breaking her shaft, etc., especially while on low water inspection trips for the Mississippi River Commission/Army Corps of Engineers on the lower Mississippi where sandbars were plentiful! She had engine problems and was "floundering" when the DQ came along and valiantly towed her into Natchez. It has also been said that it was bad luck to have a preacher and a white mule aboard. One tale is that a long ago steamboat crew remedied the situation by throwing the preacher overboard and painting the mule blue!
