Darin: I agree that the GOLDENROD does NOT need to placed in a moat -- and one that will destroy a city park in the process. A lot of people just don't "get it" (or care!)that there are ONLY two authentic showboats in existence, probably due to the fact that we are plagued with horrendous casino "boats" up and down the river which many people actually think are old riverboats made over!!! The GOLDENROD would have been gone many years ago, had Capt. Menke not placed her on a steel barge in 1947, a feat that was accomplished within 24 hours and only one performance was missed! And the June, 1962 fire badly gutted the theatre and the pilothouse fell all the way down into the hull! Capt. Menke, with limited means, did what he could to save his beloved boat, but found the task to be too, too much. He sold it to Frank Pierson and a group of investors, but Frank very kindly allowed Capts Bill and Charley Menke, and longtime actress Blanche Forbes to remain living on the showboat. So, like some other boats we know, the GOLDENROD has overcome some terrific obstacles and does not deserve to be cast aside as junk because she didn't make a million dollars. Like all of us who are getting older, the old gal needs some fixing up and a new paint job. Despite the nay-sayers, the boat is very worthy of saving and I applaud those hearty souls who wish to take on the task! Long live the GOLDENROD!!!
