Spring has sprung here in Kentucky and yesterday was beautifully sunny with a nice temperature of 72 degrees. The AMERICAN QUEEN was at the upper landing for a visit and looked just great! Meanwhile, down the wharf a bit, things are humming aboard the historic steamer BELLE OF LOUISVILLE in preparation for her first charter cruise on March 29th. The old engineroom bell system (original 1914 equipment) was disconnected several years ago by a mis-guided soul. Thanks to Capt. Bill Ray, the system is again functional and those old bells will be ringing again on special occasions. The engineroom telegraph system (installed in the early 1950's) will still be the main mode of communication between the engineroom and pilothouse. I always maintain that the OFFICIAL start of spring is the sound of a steamboat whistle!
