Hi, Elanie & Keith:
Appreciated your comments on the board and E=Mails here on the above. I got a bit carried away in the story but thought, "What the heck." I've got to dig in those boxes at mother's place and see if I can locate the series of B/W pictures I took of the doomed Cincinnati Public Landing and all of those classic old buildings at the top of the hill. I know I sent some to Fred Way years ago.

Stan Garvey's 'KING & QUEEN of the River' is a dandy for early and later history of the DK/DQ. Sure, some of the things I posted are in the book. Remember, John Burns and Stan Garvey stayed at my home years ago prior to the book's publication when it was in draft form. John Burns related many anecdotes then and later via phone conversations with him in California. The collection of his dad's (Jim Burns) papers, dockets, logs, letters were facinating to spread out here and read. Old Jim Burns was a detail man and kept many of his daily papers in triplicate. I recalled one statement for reimbusement in the 1920s when he took the U.S. Steamboat Inspector to lunch at a Sacramento hotel--the tab was $2.85 [!]. In the 'salad days' CALIFORNIA TRANSPORTATION CO., was no small concern: employed some 1,200 people with offices, wharves, boats and a full shipyard. Old Capt. Anderson was driven to work each day in a limosine. Jim Burns had two 'company cars' in his garage at home. Lots of anecdotes appeared in Stan's book and many others didn't. Editors always hold 'blue pencil' power with a finality.
Cheers,
Dale
