Dale: I remember seeing the DK shaft and other big pieces strewn about on the riverbank over in Bellevue, Kentucky in the early 1970's. I thought it was near where the old CHRIS GREENE was moored as a boat harbor. These were visited when Virginia Bennett and Mickey Frye took me on a tour of the regional river sights and sites. We also paid a visit to the old steamer WAKEROBIN. Some who visit this board might not be aware that the original DQ paddlewheel shaft is now on display in the yard of the Howard Steamboat Museum. I don't know about the pitman on the wharfboat. A lot of stuff that was stored in the hull was removed and some of it was burned on the Cincinnati wharf, including many ornamental wooden pieces from the cabin of the CHRIS GREENE. As you mentioned, the wharfboat sank shortly after it was sold and moved downriver where it was to become a marina. I have photos of it sunk with only the roof showing above the waterline and GREENE LINE STEAMERS emblazoned across the roof in huge white letters. Dorothea Frye told me that she thought several cartons of the framed reproduction of her DQ night scene painting (that were sold in the gift shop) went down with the wharfboat. I always thought that wharfboat (when still in use for the DQ) was rather spooky, the way it creaked and groaned, etc. I well remember the "museum" that Capt. McMurtry (the wharfboat watchman) had in the area where the steps went up to the offices with all sorts of steamboat memorabilia on display, including pictures, whistles, lights, bells, etc. It was truly the last of the authentic steamboat wharfboats.
