Everyone was so excited when they learned Jane was going to do a few talks about the Greene days. She was better than the jazz, music & food put together. More on that later. Allow me now to offer a few observations about the Mardi Gras/Jazz ride. We really did have only about 20 minutes of sunshine during the entire 7 day ride. Fog, mist & rain sorta dogged us the entire trip. Choked a stump 10 miles up from Baton Rouge and had to bypass our stop there to make schedule in NOLA. We were almost flood stage and running in an almost shutdown fog. Kudos to expertise in the wheelhouse. We made it on time despite a very tricky river.
Mardi Gras...The parade was a blast. We had bleacher seats across from the Mayor & Councilpeople in front of Gallegher Hall watching beautiful floats and screaming "Hey Mister, throw me something". Onboard,, Jane had a packed house both times she gave a talk. The first was held in the Forward Cabin and was standing room only. They moved the second talk downstairs to the big room. New passengers were enthalled with her commentary. Many came on board as skeptics about Steamboatin' but left committed to book another ride. Approximatley 60% of the passengers were new to the river. Of the ones I spoke with I guess 85% said they will likely become repeaters. The new folks were very eager to learn about the history of Steamboatin'. Jane Greene had a whole bunch to do with their enlightenment... The Boat...Our Lady looks good. New benches have replaced those on deck outside the Texas Lounge. Looks great. Overall, she looks better than I've seen her in awhile. The attitude of the crew is high. They are happy to be back home. Happy to be back just like all of us when we return to the river.
