Ms Barnes,
your library needs a copy of McBride's River. The McBride Family has steamboated the Ohio River since 1857 (+ or -) and is still there.
Captain McBride bought the wreck of the Conqueror in 1927, raised and rebuilt her and brought out the boat in late 1928 or 1929, owned by the Koch-McBride Towing Company, just in time for the start of the Great Depression. He was obliged to mortgage his home and borrow from his father in law (Jacob Koch) to finance it. In 1932 the boat needed extensive hull repairs and was overhauled at Madison, this time using money borrowed from William Zurlinden. Despite these financial technicalities, Captain Leo Birch McBride operated and owned the boat. In March, 1937 she was sold to the Ohio River Company. On February 22, 1942 she got out of shape above the L&N Bridge at Cincinnati, hit a pier and was destroyed. Sixteen persons drowned. Send $9.00 to me at 2040 Sherwood Avenue, Louisville, KY 40205-1112 for a copy of the book.
