Subject: Re: US Marine Hospitals in Louisville / Natchez / Hughes Family

Thanks, Linda, for mentioning that fine article from the Courier-Journal which contained a photo of the cupola on the Marine Hospital at Natchez, Mississippi. I saw some very interesting photos of it just last week while while visiting in Natchez. That building was slated for restoration, too, but burned in the 1980's and was demolished. The Louisville Marine Hospital saw to the care of many steamboat officers and crew members, including Miss Lillian Hughes, popular hostess on the Str. GORDON C. GREENE and sister of our beloved "Miss Helen" Hughes Prater. Lillian was hospitalized for many months and passed away in there in the late 1930's. Today marks the 33rd anniversary of the passing of the father of Lillian and Helen, Capt. Jesse P. Hughes, who died in 1973 at age 96. Being in the pipe organ business, it especially intrigued me to learn recently that Lillian and her mother, "Aunt Telia", both served as organists at the Methodist Church at Catlettsburg, Kentucky. The pipe organ they played no longer exists (although I tracked down some dandy pictures of it for Miss Helen) but there are plaques in the sanctuary paying tribute to them for their dedicated service as church musicians. What a great steamboating and artistic family!
