Subject: Belle of Louisville's engines

I was not aboard the Belle of Louisville during the Great Steamboat Race, but I was in a position to watch her performance. It is obvious that the indicator tests run by Bruce Babcock and analyzed by Keith Baylor have paid off handsomely. The screech of wasted steam is no longer heard and the exhausts are more squarely even than they have been for many years. The Belle was overloaded and down by the stern - otherwise she would have made a race of it.
