Subject: Today in History - General Jackson launching |

Just as it's hard to believe the Str. NATCHEZ is now 31 years old, it's equally amazing that the GENERAL JACKSON has been around for 21. I well remember the festivities on the day of her launching, which included Grand Ole Opry stars like Minnie Pearl and others. Workmen chopped thick lines and the big sternwheeler gracefully slid down the ways into the river with a spectacular splash, to be caught by towboats awaiting the "delivery" of the new boat. It was sort of a deja vu feeling of being at the Howard Shipyard for the launch of a new steamboat! I bought a tee shirt souvenir that day of the launching, but it certainly will NOT fit me now!
