Hi, Jo:
I pulled some volumes from the library shelves here. There are now 265,000 manuscripts/documents from the Howard Shipyards & Dock Company at the Lilly Libraryat Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. Also the stellar photographic work by Jim Howard showing all aspects of steamboat construction in Jeffersonville is a must. Keith Norrington knows the Howard collection far better than I do.
I've a paper here I slammed together years ago on how steamboat builders acquired the timber for boats in Kentucky, West Virginia, Indiana etc. It was no small job. Many of the giant sidewheelers of the 'palmy days' may have operated in the Southern trade, but they were designed and built by several northern yards. I don't want to bore other readers and hog the web. To avoid this contact me at the below E=Mail if you wish. Cheers, R. Dale Flick flikbic@fuse.net R. Dale Flick
