Subject: Steamboat building administration

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me. I'm writing a novel set in the old west, but part of it takes place in New Orleans and references the Civil War. My protagonist's father is a shipbuilder when the story starts. The year is 1865, he has five children (the eldest is six or seven) and I am trying to work out his age, what position he holds with the shipbuilding company and when he could have become an administrator. According to research so far, he could have been apprenticed to the shipyards on the east coast before coming down to New Orleans around the same time as the start of war - when he builds ironclads - as he is brought up in Virginia. Could you help, or do you know of someone who could? Thankyou very much for any help you can give.
