Tuck: It doesn't surprise me that those old wooden lifefloats keep turning up. I know what you mean about their construction, as some of them did have some rather crudely cut openings. A few years ago, ten lifefloats stencilled STR. U.S. MISSISSIPPI were found "hiding" beneath the pilothouse of the boat at Marietta, now renamed BECKY THATCHER. And I know of one large float from the Streckfus excursion steamer CAPITOL which has hand holes in both ends -- sort of a life float "built for two"! I don't remember exactly when the Coast Guard outlawed the floats, but they decided that more people would be killed from being hit in the head with them, as they were tossed overboard, than by other means!
