Here's another link, though not steamboat/river related. Years ago as a kid and young sailor around ships, I'd now and then see real 'old salts' with those stars tatooed on their ear lobes. This as a tailsman against bad luck. Copper bracelets around the wrists and ankles were worn to ward off arthritis/rheumatism.
