For the record, we still do run into those old floats from time to time. Cleaning out the holds recently, we found a baker's dozen of them and strategially hid them to keep them from walking off. We could already make out the Avalon and Idlewild imprints under layers of paint in some of the better examples, but many were worn, torn, or had been used to hold paint.
One interesting (if minor) thing; some of the life floats appear to be "made on the run". Bill Ray's (Yes, he has one) and the majority of the floats we found have smooth oval hand grips. Some, though, had very uneven rectangle grips, often rough still after many years. There's a little speculation from me on who made these floats.
