Dale, I've been thinkin' about that calliope duel you brought up. It's funny how things that have been forgotten suddenly are "dredged UP" on this message board! The Waterways Journal did a story on the "duel" and there was a photo of E.J. Quinby standing at the calliope of the AVALON -- although he, of course, played the instrument on the DQ. Harry Stocksdale, of my hometown, (New Albany, Indiana) played calliope on many boats, including the ISLAND QUEEN when Homer Denney was off. Mr. Stocksdale died at least 20 years ago at an advanced age, but he and his wife attended the same church as my family -- and he had been my grandmother's piano teacher! I visited him once at his home when I first was bitten by the steamboat bug. His studio was filled with boat pictures and steamboat models. One of my treasures is the sheet music for "CALIOPE RAG" which features a wonderful color picture of Homer Denney playing on the ISLAND QUEEN. I know you donated a copy of this to the Inland Rivers Library some years ago. It's rare, although Jeff Spear found a framed copy hanging on the wall in an Ohio antique mall just several weeks ago! Ya never know what's gonna turn up when you least expect it!
