You're right, Keith, about the pilot house telegraph, but I was talking about the engineroom telegraph. Dad was an engineer on both the GORDON and the BELLE, and he identified the engineroom telegraph.

The GORDON's pilot house telegraph was set to pull the "arm" fore and aft, but photos that I've seen of it's days on the CAPE GIRARDEAU show it mounted to pull transverse ways. Hence it's back was to the pilotwheel and only needed directions on it's front facing aft. Got it?

Thanks to Alan George in California, I have one of the GORDON's cork life vest stamped GORDON C. GREENE, AVALON, and BELLE OF LOUISVILLE.
