Dale,
Couldn't help but go off on another tangent with regards to life vests.. We had an incident aboard that sternwheel passenger vessel that I used to operate in which two life rings were stolen. The funny thing is that they were stolen in broad daylight, while we watched.. I think I was working as 1st Mate at the time and there was a big commotion on the bow. Two passengers had let out a "rebel yell" and jumped off the bow deck simultaneously. They took 2 life rings with them, but due to all of the splashing and yelling we didn't notice that. We were underway, and they swam to shore (which was only about 100' away). I think this was the 1979 season, and we had been locking the PFD's in a storage room at night because the life rings had been stolen once before at the dock. It wasn't until late that evening when we discovered the 2 life rings were gone.. and then it became clear to us what had happened. The rings were somewhat collectible as they had the vessel name nicely painted on them.
