Judy: Like you, the engine room and boiler room are rather foreign to me, although very fascinating. When my parents attended the 1949 Senior Prom for New Albany High School aboard the steamer AVALON, the boat was still a coal burner and my dad remembers seeing coal being shoveled into the boilers. Remember, the AVALON inherited the boilers from the GORDON C. GREENE shortly thereafter and the transfer was made at Owensboro, Kentucky. I think it was then that the AVALON became an oil burner. The boilers now on the BELLE were built by Nooter Corporation in St. Louis in 1967 and installed at Jeffboat in early '68. Back to that prom cruise, my mother recalls that the AVALON landed at the foot of Pearl Street in New Albany (no floodwall then and the cobblestone wharf was still intact) and that wooden planks were laid across the muddy wharf to reach the stage. Many of the girls were disheartened that their satin slippers got encrusted with mud! My wonderful parents will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on August 8th and, little did they know as they rode the AVALON as high school sweethearts, that they would have such a steamboat fanatic for a son! Capt. Kevin Mullen gave me a copy of the logbook for the AVALON for 1949 and the entry is there for the NAHS prom. The yearbook has several photos, one of which shows the AVALON aglow in lights, and scenes on deck with nearly all the boys wearing souvenir AVALON Captain's hats! I always wanted one of those hats and, in 1996, Mrs. Grace Hawley (Doc's mother who was known and loved by scores of river people) gave me one that she had saved -- and which had survived two house fires! It's truly a treasure for many reasons!
