Subject: Boats named with the letter "M" - the Str. Mississippi III

While on the topic of "M" being the 13th letter and boats named with the letter "M" having bad luck: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers steamer MISSISSIPPI (the third one of that name 1927-1961) which is now the BECKY THATCHER restaurant/showboat formerly at St. Louis,1966-75 ,and now at Marietta, Ohio) had her share of bad luck in "running through herself) and breaking her paddlewheel shaft numerous times while on the lower Mississippi, often due to striking sandbars. She also ran aground at Paducah in 1929 and missed the steamboat parade for the Ohio River Canalization with President Herbert Hoover. A bit of DQ trivia involving the Str. Mississippi: In the 1950's the DQ suffered engine problems on the lower Mississippi and needed assistance. The Str. Mississippi came to her aid and towed the DQ into Natchez. Wish I could find a photo of this event!
