Red-haired women, preachers and white horses were all supposed to be bad luck according to local lore. One boat got in trouble with all three on board, so no one knew which to blame. Blue-water sailors thought it bad luck for anyone aboard, except the boatswain, to whistle. Dunno if that still holds or not.
