Dale brought up christening traditions. I stumbled on a tradition on page 334 of Botkins “Mississippi River Folklore” concerning steamboat decorations and christening:
“Inboard on each wheelhouse was a flagstaff which flew burgees bearing the names of the cities between which the boat operated. On the flagstaff at the rear of the Texas the union jack was flown and on the rear flagstaff, called the verge-staff, flew the Stars and Stripes. It was customary for the city or the person for whom the boat was named to present a complete set of colors to the vessel. This took place upon her first call to her home port, when a large number of citizens came aboard, bands played, speeches were made, and the public was invited to participate in the dinner aboard the boat.”
