Subject: Re: The Crews' Dining Room

Jane,
I'm answering for Mary...'Rabbit' was a waiter. He said, dressed in the white tux, "I look jus' like a fly in da buttermilk!'

Remembering the crew's dining room reminds me of how Mose England (since he was stone-deaf) learned to lip read. Since he was unfamilar with French, he transposed words into what he was familar. Hence, vichyssoise became "vicious-fly" soup. Poor dear Mose hardly had a chance... Watchman, Jimmy Powell had such a terrible speech impediment, his oxtail soup became "hot tail" soup.

At the table Mary and I sat at were Watchman, Capt. Howard M. Carr (past master of the DQ). Although he was 'blind as a bat,' he served as Head Watchman (sort of honorary like.) Also seated was Bruce Edgington, Watchman. His deafness surpassed that of Mose. And Jimmy Powell with his speech difficulties. This made for interesting table-talk. When Capt. Albert Kelley returned from the Public Health Hospital, where he was diagnosed as legally blind, Mrs. Greene exclaimed, OMG, we've got 'hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil.' She sure had her plate full with that boat!

Mose England came aboard the TOM GREENE when she was a new boat. So did Capt. Kelley, though he said he would only make one trip. These above events happened in 1966. Thus they had worked for the Greenes for 41 years at that time. Speaks well of your family as an employer.

Richard
