Yes Judy, coins are still being thrown at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio, and a wish is made as it's done. It's really quite a big deal - no matter what else is going on, you must go to the bow and toss your coin. As to playing "Marching Through Georgia" I would assume that is referring to the Civil War and Sherman's march to the sea - not nice to play in the south, where in a lot of cases that "recent unfortunate unpleasentness" is still very real.
