I remember the coins at the confluence- I was told it was for luck. Also I was advised to toss into the river the first pair of shoes that I wore out or didn't want or whatever- then I would steamboat forever. Well, I never did throw my shoes overboard which is probably why I am on land right now. On ocean going vessels, I read that cats were good luck and for many years I owned a Maine Coon Cat- a sailor's cat. That's my two cents but I am enjoying everyone else's postings- great stuff : )
